A quick tutorial written for PSP users on how to create an old newspaper photo effect, both "hard" and "soft":
-->
-->
For the softer version:
-->
01.
02.
03.
04.
Step 1 --> copy texture #1 and paste over base, blend mode soft light at 100% opacity
Step 2 --> copy texture #2 and paste over base, blend mode soft light 50% opacity
Step 3 --> copy texture #3 and paste over base, blend mode multiply 100% opacity
Step 4 --> copy texture #4 and paste over base, blend mode soft light 100% opacity
Step 5 --> merge all layers, save
For a harder version:
01.
02.
03.
04.
Step 1 --> copy texture #1 and paste over base, blend mode soft light at 100% opacity
Step 2 --> copy texture #2 and paste over base, blend mode multiply at 100% opacity
Step 3 --> copy texture #3 and paste over base, blend mode soft light at 100% opacity
Step 4 --> copy texture #4 and paste over base, blend mode soft light at 100% opacity
Step 5 --> merge all layers, save
Some of these could be used as brushes, but the grain-ish and transtone textures can be used "as is," especially if you want to use them as a fill pattern for larger images. The smudge-ish textures are just for adding a faintly uneven/faded effect.
Playing around with different blend modes (though I find that multiply, screen, and soft light work best) and opacity settings will result in different looks.

Comments
Late in getting back to comments, but thanks! And I probably should. I don't belong to that community, but when I'll get around to checking it out eventually. :)
Glad to know you found it useful. It's not very detailed, but then the effect isn't too fancy, either.
